In Lowell on Sunday, Team Run’s Ethan Brown found himself racing on his virtual home course at the Ashworth Awards Baystate Half Marathon. Brown, who didn’t feel well off the start line and knew he wouldn’t get his goal time, began catching the leading runners eight miles in and kept his pace through the finish to win the race in 1:12:41.7 (averaging a 5:33 min/mile). The win was a season-long goal for Brown, who also raced in the 5k, 10k, and 15k distances this summer and fall.
Meanwhile, 2013 USATF-NE Grand Prix Champion (and 2012 Olympic steeplechaser for Ireland) Stephanie Reilly ran a gutsy race in the marathon distance, finishing in 2:47:11.4. Reilly had only opted to race the Tuesday before, and even with running eight miles almost every session, she never topped that distance as her long run. Still, due to pure talent and muscle memory, Reilly took second overall in the women’s marathon, her first career 26.2. And, in the women’s half marathon results, Lory Colella, a friend of a friend representing Team Run, also took second in (1:21:33.0).
All in all, that is one first and two seconds out of the four races on Sunday, with all three athletes placing. Of course thanks to all the volunteers and race directors in Lowell, and great work by Brown, Reilly, and Colella!
