With his victory at the Nagog Seasons Half Marathon on September 7, 2014, Amos Sang set a new course record in 1:09:52.70 — good for a 5:21 pace overall — and was a streak of Puma blue running down the home stretch. At the Lone Gull 10K in Gloucester on Sunday, Sang again set a course record in 30:14 — but this time in the flying orange of Team Run, leading fellow racers Glarius Rop (30:25), Joseph Amenya (30:53), Justin Freeman (31:18), Peter Omae (31:52), Ethan Brown (32:27), Jason Dedonato (32:30), and Stephen Gendron (33:38) to the overall team victory at what also served as this year’s USATF-NE 10K Championship. It was the most stacked finish (with Sang, Rop, Amenya, Freeman, and Omae going 1, 3, 5, 7, 11) since 2000 and the largest margin of victory by time (with Team Run 4:21 net faster than Central Mass Striders) since 2010 . At the 2000 Championships in Portsmouth, NH, Central Mass Striders went 1, 3, 5, 6, and 9; at the 2010 Championships in Shelburne Falls, MA, Boston Athletic Association’s Brian Harvey, Matthew Ely, Eric Blake, Terry Shea, Jr., and Brendan Callahan combined for a 4:46 margin of victory.
Despite the weather, which was cool and windy with onshore breezes making for a tough final mile, Sang raced to the wire against Whirlaway’s Ruben Sanca and edged out the victory for his team by three seconds, running a 30:14 at a 4:52 pace. Rop, Amenya, Freeman, and Omae rounded out Team Run’s scorers, with Brown, Dedonato, and Gendron placing within the top 50 overall out of the 1261 runners on course, a record for the race. Overall, awesome work by Team Run in the last short race of the USATF-NE Calendar. (The final overall event is the City of Manchester Marathon on Sunday, November 2.)
On the women’s side, Boston Athletic Association’s Heather Cappello and Katie Misuraca went 1-2 in the women’s race in 34:45 and 35:27, leading the Unicorns to second place overall in the women’s team scores, behind Millennium Running. (Cappello’s time was a new course record.)
