It’s that time of year again. The true distance runner’s season: cross country (XC). With cross country comes the need for XC spikes, and at Marx Running we’ve got a wide selection in preparation for this fall. In this post we’ll profile a few of our newer models and talk about the advantages of a good cross country spike.
In a way, a cross country spike is one of the most versatile shoes, especially for a high-schooler who runs three seasons. Obviously you use an XC spike for XC races, but if you take the spikes out you can use it as a road racing shoe. XC spikes are also just as effective on the track. As long as your foot’s not growing a whole shoe size over the course of a few months, you can use it for racing XC, indoor and outdoor track. Plus, you can certainly wear it as a road racing shoe if you hop in a road race over the summer. Now that’s a versatile shoe!
For all middle school and high schools in the greater-Acton area, Marx Running offers a 10% discount. Be sure to ask for that when you come in! Now, onto the spikes!
Saucony Kilkenny XC5 Spike
The Kilkenny is an entry level spike. At 5.3 ounces for women and 5.9 for men, it is still super light, about half the weight of a regular training shoe. This is a great option for a beginner runner, especially if they plan on running indoor or outdoor track. The Kilkenny has a very snug, glove-like fit to it. You want this in an XC spike, especially considering those race days when you’ll have to navigate wet, muddy terrain… You’ll be glad the spike hugs your foot. The Kilkenny has gotten solid reviews and has been a go-to spike of ours for many seasons.
Nike Zoom Rival XC
The Nike Zoom Rival is basically a counterpart to the Saucony Kilkenny. Both spikes have a solid rubberized outsole built for traction and a breathable upper. The Rival is a tad heavier, weighing in at 6.4 ounces. The main difference is that the Rival runs a bit wide. For folks with wide feet or who find the Kilkenny a bit too snug, this is a great alternative. Nike has a proven track record with their performance wear.
Saucony Carrera XC
The Saucony Carrera is a top-of-the-line performance masterpiece. This may be the lightest spike on the market at 3.5 ounces for women and 3.9 for men! The light and breathable Flex-fit upper wraps around the foot nicely, and the 6-pin spike plate on the bottom provides optimal traction. For those runners looking to squeeze a few extra seconds out of themselves, the Carrera will certainly give them that.
Nike Zoom Victory XC3
The Victory XC3 is Nike’s rival to the Carrera. It weighs in at a super light 4.8 ounces. While the Victory only has a 4-pin spike plate, the outsole is horse-shoe shaped near the front to provide great traction. This is a great 3-season spike. Although it’s a tad heavier than the Carrera, it is probably a tad more durable.
Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned veteran, we’ve got some great options for you, and we offer a 10% discount to all schools in the area. Our staff is more than happy to assist you in finding a great spike that will suit all your needs.
