Team Run opened their 2014 season with performances at the Jones 10 Miler in Amherst, Frozen Shamrock 3 Miler in Haverhill, and the USATF New England Indoor Track Championships in Boston, MA.
The majority traveled to Amherst, MA to compete in the first of the 2014 USATF-NE Grand Prix Road Race Series. The team was led by Marx Running Lowell store employee Peter Omae, who covered the hilly 10-mile course in a time of 55:28 (31st). He was followed by Steve O’Brien, who is fresh off a win at the 2014 Bill Rodgers/Theatre III 5k, in a time of 58:00 (65th). Bryant University grad Ben Coughlin crossed the line next in 58:12, good for 68th place. Store employee George Krikorian was Team Run’s 4th man (119th) followed by masters Kenyan Titus Mutinda (135th). The combined effort was good enough for 10th place among USATF-NE men’s open teams. Team Run will come together for the next Grand Prix series event, the New Bedford Half Marathon, on March 16th.
At the Frozen Shamrock 3 Miler in Haverhill, Marx Running Acton store employees Jeff Veiga and Ethan Brown took 1st and 3rd, respectively. Veiga, a multiple UMass Lowell DII All-American, pulled away in the first mile to take the victory in an impressive 14:43. Brown’s effort of 15:15 was good for 3rd place. Brown will compete in New Bedford on March 16th while Veiga will join Team Run at the 3rd Grand Prix event of the year — the An Ras Mor 5k on Sunday, March 30th.
Not to be outdone, Rylee Gillen of the Team Run youth squad competed at the USATF-NE Indoor Track Champs at Harvard University. The 15-year-old Gillen finished in an impressive 3rd in a time of 18:06.35 in the 5k. Gillen has enjoyed a fabulous winter on the roads running a 5:08 at the Millenium Mile (5th) all the way to a noteworthy 17:47 at the Super 5k in Lowell (1st). The Nashoba Regional sophomore is gearing up for the outdoor track season.
